November 2020 GCD Social

The Jolly Company

In this new segment Jenny Beer interviews a GCD dancing friend about an intriguing part of their life.

First up this month is super-photographer Rachel Winslow, showing us a few choice selections from her 40,000 dance photos, explaining what she looks for behind the camera and later on the editing screen to make a memorable photo. (Sadly, your website manager messed up the recording.)

Choice Morsels

In another new short segment we plan to highlight one of you. An opportunity for anyone to share something about yourself – maybe something that we don’t already know about you.

Tonight’s guest was Sandy Rotenberg sharing her COVID Art. Sandy talked about sewing and quilting that she has done since COVID and how important creativity is to keeping her focused and happy.

Farewell Song

Daniel Potter played and sang "Row On, Row On Another Day" and provided some history with the song. In 1820, a sperm whale attacked and sank a Nantucket whaler, The Essex. Its twenty-man crew was stranded at sea in open rowboats for 95 days. Eight survived. In 1847, a poem was written in their memory by the captain of another Nantucket whaler, The Three Brothers. It was later put to a melody by Tim Laycock. The ordeal of The Essex also inspired Herman Melville to write his seminal work, Moby Dick.

Row On, Row On Another Day

Chorus
Row on, row on, another day
May shine with brighter light
Ply, ply the oars and pull away
There's dawn beyond the night.
